Champions of 4-K Clubs Presidential Award Scheme Feted

With the aim to reignite a passion in Agriculture among the youth in Kenya, the President revived the 4K clubs in the year 2021, andthere has been tremendous improvement in pupils’ appreciation for Agriculture.
The call was followed by a robust strategy by the Ministry of Agriculture tokeep schools ablaze with agricultural activities that stir creativity, innovation and lifelong skills in the space of agriculture among learners and teachers.
Among these activities is the Presidential Award Scheme for 4K Clubs, whichinvolves competition of schools from all counties across the country, with thewinners being awarded trophies by the president at the Nairobi InternationalTrade Fair event held in Nairobi annually.
“The awarding of winners is not only arecognition of effort, it goes a long way in building the learners’ self-confidence,especially when the pupils come from far flung rural schools, it leaves a markof greatness in them,” says Douglas Murunga, the 4-K Clubs Competitions and CommunicationOfficer.
Last year’s theme of the competition was ‘Useof Technology and Innovation in 4-K Clubs for Food and Nutrition Security’, anda total of 161 schools from 34 counties took part.
Over several months, pupils and their teachers worked together in school gardens, turning them into active learning spaces. They planned their projects, planted crops, cared for them, and harvested together. Along the way, learners gainedpractical agroecological skills such as improving soil using organic manure, saving water, managing pests naturally, and adding value to farm produce.

Amagoro Comprehensive School from Trans Nzoia County emerged as the overall winner after years of steady improvement. Guided by their patron, Mr. Battler Musasia, the learners showed patience, discipline, and a clear understanding ofsustainable farming practices. Nyalenya Comprehensive School from Siaya County claimed the first runners-up position, while Cura Comprehensive School from Kiambu County took second runners-up in their first appearance at the nationallevel. Their success showed that both experience and fresh ideas matter in Agriculture.
Receiving the trophies from the President was a proud moment for the learners and theirteachers. It gave them confidence and showed that their efforts in schoolagriculture are valued at the highest level. The awards also encouraged more schools to take farming seriously not just as a subject, but as a practical life skill.
As the celebrations ended, the impact continued. The Presidential Awards did more than recognize winners, they helped learners see agriculture as a dignified andhopeful path for the future.
As the year 2026 kicks off, schools are gearing towards embarking on bagging the next awards;only those registered under the national 4K club programme can participate. Itis beneficial for schools to register as members of 4k clubs national programmeas the learners get to benefit from such opportunities. “We call upon all schools to come on board, as we make agriculture a viable option for economic prosperity starting with our young ones,” says Charles Lusweti, the head of Youth in Agriculture Unit and 4K Clubs Programme Coordinator.
